THE ACCEPTANCE SPEECH AFTER MY ELECTION AS THE NEW CHAIRMAN OF CONFERENCE OF SPEAKERS OF STATE LEGISLATURES IN NIGERIA ON SUNDAY, 5TH AUGUST, 2018 AT IKEJA .

PROTOCOLS

Distinguished colleagues, I feel honoured and privileged to stand here today to address you as the new Chairman of the Conference of
Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria.

It is a great honour bestowed on me in particular and the Lagos State House of Assembly in general. We are indeed humbled. This mandate
is a sacred one and I intend to do everything within my power to protect its sanctity.

It’s a mandate which brings about a burden – the burden to serve not only you my colleagues, but also the entire people of Nigeria who have honoured us all with their votes at our respective constituencies to promote and protect their interest and welfare.

My dear colleagues, we as leaders of state parliaments in Nigeria must come together to work for the protection of the sanctity of the
Parliament. Parliament is the bastion of democracy; hence it is our collective duty to ensure that its sanctity is not denigrated or
assaulted.

In recent times, Parliament, particularly at the state level, has come under heavy attacks which most often have been misplaced by many
who are ignorant of the duties and functions of lawmakers.

As the new Chairman of this great organization, I will work assiduously with my colleagues in the Executive Council to build on the achievements recorded by my predecessors. I will work for the
protection and promotion of the rights of the Legislative arm of government.

Inasmuch as we will cooperate with the other arms of government to put in place measures and programmes for the growth and development of the country, I assure you that we will not
keep quiet, fold our arms and watch our rights being trampled upon.

We will be gentle but firm in our demands for our right, resolute but not deliberately antagonistic.
As sated earlier dear colleagues, the Parliament is the last bastion of democracy and it’s our duty to protect it for the survival of democrat values and ideas.

Distinguished colleagues, on behalf of all Lagosians, I want to express deep appreciation to you all for creating time to attend this
conference. I wish you all journey mercies back to your respective states. And once again, thank you for giving Lagos State the mandate
to lead this organisation.

May I also use this medium to thank our governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, his wife, Mrs Bolanle, our national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, our royal father, His Majesty, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, my darling wife and all the honorable members of Lagos State House of Assembly as well as management staff.

I thank you for your listening pleasure.

Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa
Chairman,
Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures
