LAGOS ASSEMBLY URGES AMBODE TO DEDICATE JUNE SANITATION TO CLEARING OF DRAINAGES
The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode
to direct the necessary ministries and agencies in the state to ensure that
the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in the state for the month of
June, 2016 is dedicated to clearing of drainage.
This followed a motion moved by the Majority Leader of the House, Hon.
Sanai Agunbiade along with other lawmakers and seconded by Hon. Rotimi
Olowo during plenary on Thursday.
According to the movers of the Motion, the frequency of flood in the state
is occasioned by constant blockage of drains by residents of the state
through dirty habits.
Agunbiade stated that the state’s environmental law is against the blockage
of drainages, but that many residents of the state have neglected this
aspect of the law.
“We want to call on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to order the Commissioner for
the Environment to direct the residents to clear their drainages during
June, 2016 environmental sanitation exercise.
“Officers of the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) in the 20 Local
Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state
should be directed by the Governor to monitor the sanitation exercise.
“Ambode should direct the sole administrators of the local councils and
LCDAs to urge members of the Community Development Committees (CDCs) and
Community Development Associations (CDAs) to partake in the clearing of the
drainages,” he said.
The Majority Leader added that the Governor should order the Commissioner
for Information in the state to sensitize the residents about the need to
clear their drainages and the accompanying punishments for offenders.
All these were subsequently accepted as the resolution of the House after a
voice vote directed by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.
