LSHA: HOUSE COM’TEE ON TERTIARY MEETS INSTITUTIONS WITHIN ITS PURVIEW; ENSURES ADVOCACY OF EFFECTIVE GOVT. POLICIES FOR THE SECTOR
Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Tertiary Institutions pursuant to its recent creation by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Obasa in ways for the House to further carry out its oversight functions extensively in the best interests of the people commenced with an inaugural meeting with the tertiary institutions leaders under its purview on Wednesday at the Assembly Complex.
The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Ajani Owolabi, opened the floor of discussion, stating that the essence of the meeting is to understand the status of ongoing projects in the institutions based on the observant view on the input of the Budget for Y2021.
“It is important that we understand each other and also for the institutions to carry the Committee along in working towards improving the institutions in Lagos State. This meeting is not to chastise or witch-hunt anyone but to really be on top of situations and issues that needs to be addressed.” He said.
Calling the institutions attention to the resolution of a recent strike action in Lagos State University, LASU by his intervention to the Special Adviser on Education; Hon. Ajani maintained that it is when the Committee and the House is availed with information that could assist in advocating for effective government policies that will enable the sector to grow for the benefit of the students in the institutions and its administration.
“I am very much available as the Chairman of this Committee, especially coming from an academic background in line of lecturing. I am in a good position to understand the plight and yearnings of the institutions on issues that may come up or arise which will enable the House to make laws and regulations that will address the issues of the institutions, moving forward.” He added.
Provost, Lagos State College of Health Technology, Mr. Moyo Kasim congratulating the Chairman on his new appointment, gave an overview of the College programs and administration. He also appreciated the government’s efforts on the success and achievements recorded between the short period the College was established.
Hon. Ajani assured that saddled with the responsibility of reporting to the House on the state of affairs in the institutions; the Committee will commence on an all-encompassing visitation as an oversight function to the State owned tertiary institutions very soon.
Institutions present at the inaugural meeting include; Lagos State University, LASU, Lagos State Polytechnic, LASPOTECH; Lagos State College of Nursing, Midwifery & Public Health Nursing, Igando, and Lagos State University of College of Medicine.
Other Hon. Members of the Committee who attended the meeting with Hon. Owolabi Ajani are Hon. Desmond Elliot, Hon. Olawale Olayiwola, Hon. Setonji David, Hon. Bisi Yusuff and Hon. Akinsanya Nureini.
